BACKGROUND
Operation
Firewood was a military operation in Angola, executed by the South African
Defence Force (SADF) on 31 October 1987 during the Angolan Civil War and South
African Border War.
The aim
of the operation was to locate and destroy the forward headquarters of the Northern
Front of the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), located near a small
place called Indungo, about 50 km northeast of the town of Techamutete, just west
of the road about 35 km past Cassinga on the way to Capelongo (previously known
as Artur de Paiva). The operation would place on 31 October 1987 and would
comprise of a single surprise attack involving elements from elite SADF units such
a 2 Reconnaissance Regiment, 5 Reconnaissance Regiment, 1 Parachute Battalion
and 101 Battalion of the South West African Territory Force (SWATF).
