Johan,

I was "afgedeel" to SWATF from late 83 to middle 87 and toured between Sectors 10; 20; 70; Southern Angola and . . .

If only I had found your site earlier and knew about the tour through the area as I would have gotten on board for sure! I have a few ghosts I would like to lay to rest and I strongly believe that a tour of such nature could help heal a few wounds in the old soul.
Any way thanks for giving us vets a gateway in order to take a walk back in time and in doing so be heard or be able to perhaps lend an ear to another troubled soul.

Many Thanks & Best Regards,

Stoney

Nice to hear from you, Stoney!

Never fear.... as to the Angola Battlefields Tour, I am sure there will be a repeat again next year! I also hope to join one of these tours someday soon, as you say.... thoses ghosts need to be laid to rest!

In the interim, we local guys are dealing with it through our wargames, and often come to realise just HOW lucky we have been that time (or shall I say... FAVOURED???). Things often could have gone so horribly wrong!

If you have information about the details of the SWATF battalions you served with, that would be most welcome. I am always in search of organigrams, strengths, call signs, equipment used, even commander names, etc.... that I can use in creating accurate scenarios for our miniature refights. At the moment I dont even know if the SWATF battalions adhered to the std SADF structures and call signs as per SA Inf Bn.... Maybe you can shed some light here

Regards

Johan

Johan,
The majority of the SWATF were SADF or SAP in SWAPOL(KOEVOET)! 905 NEPARA & 906 MOSHESH were both initially SWATF under different Battallion ID'S and so was 31BN at OMEGA! SWASPES at OTAVI who served 53BN; 201; 202 etc, was all POTCH BIKERS & HORSEMEN who were transferred out "Afgedeel" like myslef to SWATF plus many more but we kept our colors & emblems and dropped our berrets for Nutrea Brown Bonnies! The funding was all SADF as it was with UNITA! True SWATF members who were born and bred in SWA wore a lighter green berret with a Gemsbok over various colors for different divisions with a diamond in the middle of the colors! Their officers pips were diamonds and the NCO'S stripes were straight horizontal and not V'D! Specialized BN'S like 31BN at OMEGA had WHITE CHEST BLACK CROW emblem over the SAI colors! The White and Black crow emblem represented the RECCE colors as this was a BUSMAN TRACKER RECCE BN! 905 & 906BN'S had regular SAI emblems and colors on their bonnies!
I will take a look and send you some photos of the local black mostly ex terr members I worked with for your wall! Watch this space . . .
Best Regards, Stoney
