The first Ratel infantry combat vehicle course was presented by Major Roland de Vries at 1 SA Infantry Battalion in 1976,. As a Commandant he took over command of 61 Mechanised Battalion Group from Commandant Johan Dippenaar in 1981 and commanded Battle group 10 during Operation Protea in August 1981. During Operation Daisy in November 81 he was the commander of Battle Group 61. in 1983 he was transferred to SA Army Battle School as a new Colonel. where he was appointed Training Wing Commander responsible for combined arms training at unit and formation level. He became Second-in-Command of the Battle School in 1986. In October 1987 he joined the Headquarters of 20 Brigade to participate in Operation Modular in south east Angola, where he was Chief of Staff and Acting Brigade Commander. For his battlefield exploits and tactical astuteness, Roland de Vries has rightfully been called the “Rommel of the SADF". He wrote a number of books, "Mobiele Oorlogvoering" (Mobile Warfare), and the latest being "Eye of the Firestorm".
