New Sergeant-Major of the Army

SGT-MAJ O. O. Snyman, PPM, recently became the highest ranking NCO in the SADF when he took over as Sgt-Maj of the Army.

A veteran of 31 years service, he is the second man to hold this rank since it was created in 1969.

He joined the Permanent Force in 1939, after serving for a few months in the Special Services Battalion. Although he did not see active service during the war, hundreds of volunteers passed through his hands before being sent up North. In 1945 he was posted to the Middle East and the following year he was sent to an Amoured Division Equipment Park in Italy, where he met and married his wife.

After holding a number of posts, he took over as Sgt-Maj of the Military Academy, a position he held for 12 years before taking up his present position.
